Tell Us Your Best Costa Rica Travel Tips

Hack Your CityEach Monday we ask you for your best tips on a city: driving tips, restaurant recs, things to do, and any other advice for visitors and locals. Then on Thursday, we present the best comments. We’re working our way around the U.S. and around the globe.

This week on the occasionally inaccurately named column Hack Your City, we’re taking tips for the entire Central American nation of Costa Rica. Until very recently, one Lifehacker writer, who shall not be named but who wrote this post, thought it was an island. We can probably assume a tiny bit more base knowledge than this, but tell us: How do you make a great trip to Costa Rica even better?

We welcome tips for every city in Costa Rica, plus all the parts in between. Tell us about the beaches, the birdwatching, the adventuring, the pros and cons of ecotourism, but also about the best urban neighborhoods, traffic hacks, and the best overlooked bars and restaurants.

What’s underrated and unexpected? What are the best alternatives to overrated spots? What’s the weirdest, craziest, scariest, or nerdiest thing you like to do here?

How should a visitor approach the city? What are the important local traditions, behaviors, and laws? How do you describe the vibe to an outsider? Which clichés are true or false?

What’s it like long-term? Residents, what do you love and hate about the area? How do you hack daily life here? What’s a good everyday spot for locals rather than visitors? What took you years to learn about living here?

How has the area changed in recent years? What old advice no longer applies here, and what new advice does?

Leave your tips in the comments below, and we’ll highlight the best ones. (Read some other comments to make sure yours is unique.) Come back Thursday for a new post full of highlights, and us learning other embarrassingly basic things.
