When you’re trying to save money on groceries, where you shop is sometimes more important than what you’re buying.
Grocery stores are constantly running sales on different items as a way to draw customers in. That means that the exact same shopping list could be cheaper at one store this week and another next weekend.
Basket is an app that attempts to help you figure out where you should go to buy your groceries based on what you’re planning to buy.
For instance, I did a quick search for a dozen eggs, a half gallon of almond milk, and a pound of strawberries.
According to Basket, the cheapest place for me to buy those three products right now is the Target 1.4 miles away, where my total will be $8.87.
If I need the items quickly, the closest place I can buy all three is the Walgreens around the corner (.2 miles away), but that convenience will come at a cost—my Walgreens total would be $11.70.
Beyond those two, there are a handful of other suggestions on where to shop listed by distance and cost. The app also only includes chains, so all the small privately-owned stores around me aren’t included. I was personally shocked to find that Safeway, my closest “grocery store” was the most expensive of the bunch. I would have definitely thought that honor would go to the drug stores.
That said, in most cases, I would rather buy produce at a traditional grocery store rather than a drug store. While I might consider the Target for this particular shipping list, I would probably still pick the more expensive grocery store over a Walgreens or Rite Aid.
Tapping on each store will give you a breakdown of the cost so you can see which items are driving your bill up or down. You can also filter your results so you’re only seeing grocery stores, online grocery stores, or places that have the exact items you’re looking for (by default it will suggest replacements).
You’ll probably need to apply a bit of common sense here (spending $21 at Whole Foods might yield better groceries than spending $20 at Rite Aid), but if you shop at multiple stores it can help you discover where you should consider going this week.
