This year was full of incredible events and big discoveries. When we look at the achievements of scientists, like photos from Mars or the treatment of cancer, we realize that the future has come. And even the development of the fashion industry indicates that we are on the right path. We will definitely remember 2018 as a successful year.
The Bright Side team has taken a look back at the past 365 days and chose the most significant and memorable events that happened in 2018.
The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine
The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2018 was awarded jointly to James P. Allison and Tasuku Honjo “for their discovery of cancer therapy by inhibition of negative immune regulation.” The scientists found out how cancer tumors trick the immune system. This allowed them to create an effective anti-cancer therapy.
The highest grossing movie
Avengers: Infinity War earned more money than any other movie of 2018. At the moment, this movie is in 4th place on the list of the highest grossing movies in history after Avatar, Titanic, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Yanny or Laurel
The internet community has been divided again, just like several years ago when everyone was arguing about what color the dress was. Today, the argument is about the acoustic illusion, the answer to the question that blogger Cloe Feldman asked in her Twitter. Even experts tried to explain the phenomenon. And what do you hear?
FIFA World Cup
11 cities, 32 teams... 6.8 million tourists watched the games on the stadiums, one out of every 4 people in attendance were female, 576,000 hot dogs were eaten during the 31 days of the championship. The French team became champions for the second time and this championship in Russia was named the best in history. We won’t just remember the event because of the great games, but also because of the jokes, memes, and eccentric fans that became famous worldwide.
Banksy’s Girl with Balloon
The painting of probably one of the most mysterious artists of today — Englishman Banksy self-destructed right after it was sold at an auction by Sotheby’s in London, at the beginning of October. Later, the artist posted a video where he explained that he put a shredder into the frame of the painting several years before. “In case it would ever be sold at an auction.”
The first photo from Mars
On November 26, 2018, NASA InSight successfully landed on the surface of Mars and sent the first image. And on December 7, 2018 the spacecraft sent a sound recording of the wind on Mars. Later, the European Space Agency posted a photo of an ice-filled crater.
The fashion industry took the side of the animals.
“Fur? I’m out of that. I don’t want to kill animals to create fashion. It’s wrong,” Donatella Versace claimed. The same was done by Chanel and handbag manufacturer, Furla.
The biggest wedding of the year was the wedding of Prince Henry and Megan Markle. Other celebrities who got married in 2018 were: Game of Thrones stars Kit Harington and Rose Leslie, Gwyneth Paltrow, Vanessa Paradis. Some famous people who had very quiet weddings were Hugh Grant and Quentin Tarantino.
Children of the year
In 2008, Eva Longoria, Kirsten Dunst, Jessica Chastain, Rachel McAdams, Khloé Kardashian, and Kylie Jenner had their first babies. And the Royal family now has one more heir.
